Distinguished war hero, airline pilot, role model and veteran of 44 years of military service. Native of Pennsylvania. Aviation career began at Maxwell Field, Montgomery, Alabama. During World War II performed bombing missions against Japan. Participated in last World War II mission as a B-29 Aircraft Commander. Heavy bomber test pilot following end of hostilities. Transferred to United States Army during Vietnam war to qualify for combat duty as Army Aviator. Instructed in helicopters at Fort Rucker, Alabama. Served two tours in Vietnam as medical evacuation pilot. Personally rescued more than 5500 wounded soldiers. At age 49, he earned America’s highest award for valor, the Medal of Honor.
