RICHARD BUTLER
Aeronautical engineer, competition sailplane pilot, sailplane designer and corporate aerospace executive. Born 1942 in Albertville, Alabama. Received aeronautical engineering degree from Auburn University and graduate degree in aerospace engineering from University of Tennessee Space Institute. Internationally recognized expert in low speed aerodynamics and lightweight structures in high performance sailplanes. Five time United States soaring champion. Represented United States in world competition as member of four international soaring teams. President of Sverdrup technology (1994-1999), a leader in aerospace and defense research. Honored by American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics for contributions to low speed aerodynamics. Named outstanding alumnus of Auburn University and University of Tennessee Space Institute.
